ESL: Acad Resrch Write 1 (24) — In this course, you will learn how to notice the ways in which experienced writers accomplish academic writing in the field of X. You will learn how to see academic research articles from a writer’s point of view rather than only seeing them as texts that you read to acquire content knowledge. You will develop an understanding of the three structural levels through which the content of an academic research article is delivered, and you will learn how to decipher the organizational patterns followed at each structural level. You will develop an understanding of how flow operates and is achieved through linguistic devices at each structural level. You will identify some specific phrasing and grammar constructions that are commonly used in academic research articles in X. You will also review the concept of plagiarism and strategies for avoiding it. As you learn to notice the features of writing in physics, you will also practice integrating those features into your own writing. You will engage in peer editing as a way to develop your ability to notice how the writing of novices like you differs from that of experienced writers like your professors and as a way to develop your own ability to edit your writing before it is submitted to your professors.
