ESL: Service Learn Prjct (12) — Web Description~In this course, students have the opportunity to merge academics with community service so that students have a first-hand experience in the local community. Students have the opportunity to improve their academic and social English skills through local partnerships and service projects related primarily to the issue of gentrification. Gentrification occurs when wealthier people move into an urban area, resulting in an increase in rents and property values which affects the poorer residents in the community and the culture of that community. Our partners for this issue are Technology Enterprise Project and Habitat for Humanity’s Innovation Shelter. Students also participate in the Kindness Project, where they see how a simple idea can impact a community.
